From the Archives: Children & Proverbs

I spent some time on the weekend cleaning up my blog tags- this is a HUGE project and is probably going to take me months to do. In cleaning up the tags, I have had the opportunity to revisit different posts from over the years. I have close to 1250 blog posts (CRAZY!!!) so there are a lot of posts I have forgotten about. It's been fun to be reminded of different aspects of my life, favourite beauty products, songs that I love(d), books I've read, places I've been. 

Here is a post from March of 2013 (original post can be found here), that I thought I would share again. A grade one teacher gave her students the first half of a well-known proverb and asked them to complete the proverb. 

1. Don't change horses...until they stop running.

The Young Professional: Trip & Tyler Office Hacks

Happy Monday! I have been off the radar recently because work has been super busy. I had a week long conference that I was co-hosting last week, and a week long internal conference this week. Plus I am working on a fundraising dinner for later this month and a HUGE event- the biggest event I have ever worked on- the first week of December. Plus my usual day to day work. I am having a blast and enjoying it all...but this blog has had to take a bit of a back seat.

Tripp Crosby is one of my man crushes...he is hilarious!! He is also the Tripp part of Tripp & Tyler. I was looking at Tripp and Tyler videos to play at this weeks conference and thought that this one would be great to share on the blog!! Enjoy!!

Is That Why You've Never Been On The Show Before?

Happy Friday Junior- as my favourite morning radio host would say!! We are almost at the end of the first full week of 2015. So far, things are going ok. I've had a challenge or two thrown my way already, but I have been very focused on my 2015 Word of the Year.

 

I don't know how many of you caught Nicole Kidman on Jimmy Fallon earlier this week, but it was funny. Not surprising, since most things Jimmy does are funny. I watched the clip (below) several times yesterday and just had to share it on the blog.

Beyond You- Leadercast 2014

Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend Leadercast, which is a full day conference in Atlanta, Georgia but has 750 host sites around the world, which allows 150,000 leaders to participate. I was at one of the host sites as a guest of Kinetic Noise Control.

This was the first time that I attended Leadercast and it was an amazing experience!! The day was full of inspiring speakers- like Laura Bush, Malcolm Gladwell and Desmond Tutu- who spoke on the topic of 'Beyond You' leadership. Leadership is not about you, it's about the people you are leading. Leadership should not be self serving. 

It was energizing and thought provoking. I was inspired to go back to work and put into practice things that I had learned (and things I had been reminded of). 

Good leadership lives beyond you. Otherwise you become someone's bad example. 

Good leaders ask how they can help and then actually help out.

Good leaders take the time to mentor the younger generation...they aren't scared to do this, even is the younger generation might take their job. 

Leadership starts before you become the boss. Be a team player.

This was such an amazing day and gave me a little boost of confidence on how to approach some things in my life. It has inspired me to change some of my approaches for work and has given me ideas on how I should structure my leadership style for the two summer students I will have working with me this year. 

Tripp Crosby was one of the co-hosts...he is hilarious, by the way. One of my favourite quotes from the day was:

Leaders do not take selfies. 

Tripp encouraged us to start a new trend of #Yousie, where we take a picture of someone else and say something encouraging/nice about that person when we post the photo on social media.

Leadercast 2015 is taking place on May 8...everyone should have the chance to attend this fantastic event!!

Team Annabelle

We all know about the blogging community; the special friendships that only other bloggers can understand, an international network, a personal support system...all of the benefits. We also know how generous, kind and thoughtful bloggers can be. 

I will admit, I am not very good at being part of the blogging community in general. I am so busy with my everyday life, that I squeeze in blogging moments when I can. Unfortunately, it means that I miss out on a lot of blogger community moments. But, c'est le vie.

However, there was no way I could pass up on the opportunity to be part of Team Annabelle! 

Jen, from JVKom Chronicles, initiated this whole thing, in support of Annabelle from The Carolina Country Girl, who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The reasoning, the timing...everything surrounding this is a demonstration of the true spirit of the blogging community.

While I can't imagine what Annabelle is going through right now...I did want to show my support. Annabelle believes that everything happens for a reason. I believe this too. I also believe that God never gives you more than you can handle. 

When it comes to be encouraging and 'saying the right thing', I become a really awkward person. I'm not great at giving advice or insight...but I'm ok with that. I know my shortcoming and accept them. But, I do know how to make people laugh. 

So, Annabelle, in the midst of the touching, supportive, insightful and kind words all the other bloggers will be sharing with you, I'm happy to share a few things I find funny. 

Laughter, after all, is the best medicine.

My co-worker and good friend shared this with me- it was on of those forwarded emails. I thought this was pretty funny, so I had to share it with all of you.

A 1st grade school teacher had 26 students in her class. She presented each child in her classroom the 1st half of a well-known proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb It's hard to believe these were actually done by first graders. I hope everyone had a great weekend! Mine was pretty low key- and rainy- but super relaxing, exactly what I needed.

This weeks dose of humour:

    1. Favorite childhood book When I was 4 or 5, I had this book, a gift from my Godmother, about a rabbit who goes to school. The cover was a peachy-orange and for the life of me, I can't remember what it's called! But I LOVED that book!  I also had a book, from my Auntie Kay, that was a collections of stories and nursery rhymes. My dad would read from it every night. I loved that book so much and it got so much use, that the binding came undone. We had a book that actually was my dad's when he was a kid. There was a story every day of the year. We still have this book at home. As I got older, I started to read Sweet Valley and The Baby-Sitters Club.
2 . Favorite Book lately Yesterday, I finished reading Sorority Sisters by Claudia Welch. This book made me laugh and cry...I really did love it and I can't wait to re-read it. Other current favourite books include Prep: A Novel, The Great Gatsby and Valley of the Dolls. And anything by Sophie Kinsella. 
3. Book you wish you could live in What a great question! I suppose any chic lit book. Those are always fun. Or Prep.
4. If you could be any character from a book who would it be and why? Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby...Aspeth from Prep...
5. Favorite Book turned Movie? Confessions of a Shopaholic! I loved this book and I loved this movie! 
6. Favorite Magazines Flare, Elle Canada, Town & Country

Happy Sunday! Canadians get a 3-day weekend because of Thanksgiving and a childhood friend got married yesterday- so it's a great weekend for me! Come back this week for posts on both events.

LOL & Sunday Social

I can't believe it's the last day of September! Where has the month gone?!?!? But what a gorgeous weekend we had here! I can't believe how beautiful the weather was! It was sunny and warm, without being hot- a perfect fall weekend! I had an amazing weekend (which I will write about later this week) and I hope you did too!

I am a HUGE hockey fan (Go Rangers!) and I am, like the rest of the fans, disappointed with the lockout. A friend of mine posted this on Facebook, and I just had to share:

      1. What do you miss most about being a kid? Having no responsibilities! It's really not a lot of fun being a grown up. Sure, you can do whatever you want, but you also have to pay the bills, clean the house, do groceries, etc. Not a whole lot of fun. 
2. Did you have a nickname growing up? What was it? My dad used to call me 'Bean' (and sometimes still does). I'm not sure why...I don't consider this a nickname, but other do...a lot of my friends call me either Meliss or Miss. I see them both as just shorter versions of my name and not so much a nickname. 
3. What was your favorite thing to do at recess? Recess was pretty standard...we'd just play games- tag, red rover, baseball, etc. It was fun. 
4. What did you want to be when you grew up? A lot of things! A politician and lawyer were the most common/long standing. 
5. What was your favorite toy? Like every little girl, I loved Barbie. I also liked Quints (quintuplet dolls). I was really into arts and crafts, so I loved crayons, paint, clay, etc. I loved my Light Brite and Etch-A-Sketch. My parents also got me this toy that hooked up to our VCR and I could draw, colour, etc on our tv. That was pretty cool!
6. What is the funniest thing you did as a kid that your parents still remind you about? Hmm...I'm not sure! I don't think this is the funniest...but I used to have an imaginary friend, and I knew it was imaginary. I also used to tell people I had multiple brains and they were different colours.  I was a creative child.
