Sunday Reading & Coffee

I always felt reading the Sunday newspaper and drinking coffee was a very grown up thing to do and something I should  be doing, so I did. While I no longer have a newspaper subscription, I still feel that a great Sunday includes coffee and reading.

With this concept, I decided each week- on Sunday- to share some of my favourite reads from the past week. So grab a cup of coffee (or your beverage of choice) and enjoy these reads.

I've known for awhile that drinking lemon water in the morning was good for you, but I didn't realize there were 7 Benefits Of Starting Your Day With Lemon Water.

Like so many others, I love to sleep!! This article, What Happens During Sleep?, shows why our bodies love sleep.

There is no denying we live in a Social Media World and that we are very dependent on technology. How Social Media Has Made Us Obsessed With Making Life Look Perfect is a reminder that a lot of life happens outside of social media.

Not much reading, but funny enough to share, Three Brothers Re-Created Old Photos To Make This Epic Calendar For Mom.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday...I don't have any real plans. I might meet a friend for lunch, depending on how she's feeling and the weather. Otherwise, I think I'll just read, blog and hang out around the apartment. Nothing exciting, but hopefully relaxing!

Hope everyone has a great Sunday!!

Yet another study shows that red wine is good for you. This time, a glass of red wine is equivalent to one hour at the gym.

Going along with the wine theme...There Are Two Types Of Women: Red Wine Drinkers And White Wine Drinkers. I don't think this is true or accurate, but still a fun read.

Moving away from wine and to one of my loves, books! I actually read this article a while back and just had to share, Book Lovers Are Obsessed With This Website.

Clueless is one of my favourite movies and I can't believe it's turning 20 this year! To celebrate, As If: 20 Underrated Moments Of Clueless Brilliance

Hope everyone has a great Sunday...I am spending it in our weekend home, up in rural Ontario. Lots of snow, but I have a cozy home to cuddle up in. It's Superbowl Sunday, but I will not be watching the game, commercials or halftime show...I'm just not interested. It'll be a lazy Sunday of reading, binge watching DVDs and just taking it easy. Whatever you do today, hope you enjoy it!

Sunday Reading & Coffee

After I graduated from University, I was gifted (at my request) a Sunday subscription to a Toronto newspaper, which I read every week while drinking coffee...I felt it was a very grown up thing to do and something I should  be doing, so I did. While I no longer have a newspaper subscription, I still feel that a great Sunday includes coffee and reading.

With this concept, I decided each week- on Sunday- to share some of my favourite reads from the past week. So grab a cup of coffee (or your beverage of choice) and enjoy these reads.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Smart, Pretty & Awkward should be a mandatory read.

January is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, and this Globe & Mail article talks about The 72%, which was this year's Awareness Campaign.

Personally, I like Miss Universe Canada's National Costume. I think it's unique and representative of Canada. Love it!!

This weekend is the NHL All-Star Weekend. It's a three day event; Fantasy Draft of Friday, Skills Competition on Saturday and the All-Star Game on Sunday. I love watching the Fantasy Draft, it's pretty entertaining. You can read (and watch) some of the highlights from the draft here.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday...I am busy working a HUGE fundraiser and have at least a 18 hour day ahead of me...I cannot wait until Monday (yes, I have the day off- thankfully)!!

While I am against the word 'Selfie', I did enjoy Elle Canada's The Top 5 Reasons To Take A Selfie.

Sunday Social- Holidays & The New Year

I can't believe that I have to go back to work tomorrow, after 2 weeks off. As much as I love my job, I am dreading going back...I once left the office two hours early on a Friday and Monday morning I had 179 emails. I can't imagine how many emails I'll have after two weeks...

But before heading back to work, I have to head back to my apartment! I've spent the past two weeks between my home town and the weekend house. I have about a two drive back to my apartment. There is a snowfall warning for where I currently am and ice pellets are expected for where I am going. Not the best driving conditions, but it could be worse.

After taking over a month off, I've decided to link up for Sunday Social again. So here we go:

Sunday Social- 4's

Happy Sunday! Like this week, this weekend just flew by! With the Holidays quickly approaching, things are about to get hectic and I can't wait! Like all weeks, last week was a busy one. I attended the Chamber Awards on Tuesday (we lost to real, live elephants...we didn't stand a chance to begin with =), Young Professionals Networking event on Wednesday (they served dates with parm cheese, wrapped in bacon- YUM!), Thursday was Alumni bowling (boys vs girls...the guys lowest score wasn't even close to the girls lowest score...but we had so. much. fun!) and Friday was Trivia Night in support of the United Way (our team came in second to last, but again we had a lot of fun!).

This weekend has been relatively quiet; I did a little bit of work, some Christmas prep stuff...nothing all that fun or interesting.

Before getting to this weeks Sunday Social...there is a $1,000 giveaway going on, which you can enter here. Also, my blog crush Sarah from Journeys of the Zoo is featuring me on her blog this month as part of her I Am Canadian series.

Sunday Social- Wish List & Media

Between trying to stay warm and trying to stay awake, I'm getting ready for the last little bit of this weekend. I had the opportunity to go to an AHL hockey game last night with my university roommate. We saw the Hamilton Bulldogs play the Abbotsford Heat...the Heat won in a shootout. It was a great game and I had a lot of fun.

Today, I'm attending a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters, benefiting their Go Girl program. I attended this event last year and I'm happy to be going again this year; sparkling wine reception, 3 course lunch and a fashion show. I can't wait to share this event on my blog!

1. What is currently on your wish list?A bag that I can use for work...Something that will hold my laptop, Kindle, files, wallet, pens, etc. I think I've narrowed it down to either:

Dange Dover
or

Danier Leather
I also have a Wish List on Pinterest...not a lot of things are on it, but I'm sure I'll be adding to it.

2. Share a new iPhone, droid, iPad app that you have recently discovered that we all need.
Well, I actually use Blackberry and don't use any apps..unless BBM is an app...

3. What is a new fall tv show that you have added to your dvr?Survivor: Blood vs Water! I know that this show is not new and has been on for YEARS but I've never watched Survivor until this year. I don't know if I love the show, but I love Hayden (and have seen he was on Big Brother)...so I watch it for him and haven't missed an episode this season. As for new shows...I haven't gotten into any

4. Share your social media links so we can follow you. (Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, etc) Tell us which is your favorite and why.
My favourite social media is Twitter...I love how to the point, concise and timely the information is. Whether it's an update on world events, play by play of a hockey game or just knowing what my friends are thinking/doing...it's a great way to keep up to date.

My social media links: Twitter Pinterest

5. What is a tv show, movie, or song that you could watch or listen to over and over and never get tired of?
A movie that I a, currently watching on repeat is Pitch Perfect. This is such a fun and funny movie! When it comes to TV shows, Friends continues to be funny, no matter how many times I've seen an episode. Everyone knows I'm a HUGE David Myles fan and I can listen to any of his songs on repeat, but right now, I'm really loving Whole To My Half.

Sunday Social- Life

Summer is definitely over and Fall is here in full force- it was a CHILLY weekend! I don't think all of the rain helped. Besides it being so cold, I had a great weekend. My dad was at the weekend house when I arrived and he had my new Kindle (yea!) and he took me out for breakfast on Saturday before he left. I spent the weekend doing errands and watching Pitch Perfect multiple times- such a fun movie!!

3. What do you think is the secret to a good life?

5. What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of?
So many to choose from! I'm going to go with raising over $100,000 in a single fiscal year for a non-profit. Side note: I exceeded the fundraising goal two years in a row, which meant  an additional $10,000 per year was sent to research (money raised went to local programs and services with 10% of what was raised going to research... so that's $10,000 on top of the 10%).

Sunday Social- Blog Firsts

I had a late night last night, with a 90th birthday followed by a high school homecoming. Tons of fun! I have another bust day ahead of me; my parents are hosting Thanksgiving tonight and then I'm going out with friends. Tomorrow is our big Thanksgiving meal at my aunt and uncles. I'm looking forward to seeing and spending time with my family.

5. What was your first "blogging milestone"?
I would have to go with my first follower! I'm not 100% sure who it was...But I know both Amber and The Southern Fried Bride were both early followers.

Sunday Social- Wonder Years

This weekend was supposed to be a relatively quiet one...as in I didn't have a lot scheduled. But, in true Melissa fashion, it ended up being busy. I spent the weekend at my parents weekend home, where my dad and grandma were too. Friday (after I had an amazing day...which I will blog about later this week), we went to a local bar for a drink and to pick up dinner. Saturday, my dad and I did a bunch of errands, went to the beach for what will likely be the last time this year and for dinner we went to our favourite restaurant. I spent the rest of the time preparing for a friends baby shower, which is on Tuesday! I will be sharing the baby shower planning and final outcome over the next couple of weeks.

Sunday Social

1. What were you like in middle school and high school?
The school system I was a part of didn't have middle school or junior high. In high school, I was...involved. I knew a lot of people, I participated in a TON of co-curricular activities. I did a lot of work representing the school out in the community. I did well academically- honour student- and finished a year early. A lot of staff considered me a "student leader". My guidance counselor described me as "energetic, rarely says no to a request and happy."

2. What were your favorite pastimes?
Between school, co-curricular activities and dance classes, I had very little free time. The city I grew up in, hockey was HUGE, with the local junior team having home games on Sunday night. I loved being in the arena, with friends, watching the games.

3. What songs were you obsessed with?
Hmm...I don't know if I can remember! I know that I was a Backstreet Boys fan and Britney Spears debuted when I was in grade 9. Dave Matthews Band was a favourite too. I know I haven't listed any songs...just artists...my mind is drawing a blank on songs!

4. What fashion statement do you look backing and cringe?
I went to a Catholic school, so we were in uniforms everyday. On out of uniform days/after school/weekends, it was mostly jeans and shirts. I, luckily, didn't worry about fashion statements or being on trend, so nothing to cringe about. However- and I NEVER wore these- the baby t-shirts...and chokers.

5. Who was your celeb crush?

Nick Carter, Joshua Jackson, Shane West and Devon Sawa.

6. What was your favorite movie?
Clueless & Empire Records (yes, before high school, but still...), She's All That, Whatever It Takes, Get Over It, Never Been Kissed...All those teen comedies.

Sunday Social- Job

Weekend's go too quickly and I know I'm not the only one who thinks that. I had a surprisingly low key weekend...I met with my Mark Kay consultant on Friday and I went to a friend's birthday party last night. I go every year to the party and it is always a lot of fun. I have another busy week ahead of me, but I have a couple of fun things lined up too. It should be a good week.

Sunday Social

1. What is your dream job?
I am luck to have my dream job! Since high school, I've wanted to work in non-profit fundraising. Not only am I in non-profit, but I work for an organization (Alzheimer's) which is very near and dear to my family. It was a loooong and sometimes complicated, what-are-you-doing road, but I did it.

2. If you had just won the lottery and didn't need to work for money, what would you do with your time?
I think I would still work, but on a part time basis. I really do enjoy my job. I would maybe volunteer with other organizations on a fundraising/event basis. I currently have my own scholarship, but if I won the lottery, I think I'd establish my own foundation. And, of course, I'd travel!

3. What piece of career advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?
You have to REALLY love what you do. You will not make a lot of money, you will be unappreciated, you won't be supported by your boss, co-workers or the board, you will have to work nights and weekends, even though the office isn't open. You'll have to make a lot of sacrifices in your personal life, work under pressure and constantly be proving yourself. But if you REALLY LOVE what you do and are REALLY passionate about the organization, none of the above will matter.

Also, take a post grad related program (PR, Events, non-profit management) as it will give you hands on practical experience. And always follow your gut...if you think something's a good idea, no matter how out of the box it is, push to make it happen. You have to take risks in this industry.

4. What would be your ideal "just for fun" job?
I know it's a lot of work...but travel editor...with a focus on spas and 5 star resorts. I think it would be a lot of fun to travel to really cool and interesting places, staying in luxury hotels and get pampered. While writing the reviews and meeting deadlines have the potential to be stressful, I still think this would be a fun job.

5. What was your first "real" job?
Working at my dad's company. I would fill in when his secretary was on vacation.

Sunday Social- Hand Bags

Happy Brock Homecoming! I have had the most amazing weekend so far- Alumni pub night on Friday was a blast and I spent all day yesterday on campus connecting and celebrating alumni. Today, we are doing an Alumni Wine Tour- three wineries + two buses + one lunch=a an amazing way to end Homecoming Weekend!

Sunday Social

1. What is your favorite handbag you've ever owned?
I'm not sure if I've had a favourite...I only buy bags that I like. I'm a HUGE fan of tote bags (LOVE them!) just because I carry so much stuff with me at all times. They are functional and perfect for my lifestyle. I do use this bag a ton, especially in the summer:
Lime Green Ralph Lauren

I bought this bag YEARS ago (you can see that it's been well used) but I get so many compliments on it. Plus it makes it easy to spot me in a crowd.

2. What is your dream handbag you lust over?
Right now, this one:
T1-BL
Dagne Dover
Like practically every girl out there...i would love to own a Birkin! Or a vintage quilted Chanel.

3. What are the daily essentials in your purse or work bag?
Wallet, two sets of keys (car/apartment, work), Blackberry, Kindle, usb, lip product (balm/gloss), business cards, hair elastic or clip.

4. What's in your purse (with pictures)?
So, I usually use a tote bag on a daily basis. But, because it's Homecoming, I've downsized to a smaller bag (the lime green Ralph Lauren bag mentioned in the first question). So, here's what I have:

  1. Wallet
  2. Kindle
  3. Brock Alumni sunglasses (they actually say 'Brock Alumni' on the side)
  4. Keys
  5. Lip balm
  6. Business cards
  7. Pens
  8. Not pictured: hair elastic (after I took the picture and sent it to my laptop, I realized I didn't take the elastic out of my bag for the photo), Blackberry (it was used to take the picture).

Sunday Social- Blogging

It seems that fall has arrived! It was a cold weekend (in the 60's) filled with sweatshirts. While I did spend some time walking around town window shopping, walking on the beach and reading on the patio, it was also a great weekend to stay in and watch movie. I watched The Great Gatsby for the first time...I really enjoyed it! I also watched Pitch Perfect several times this weekend...what a fun movie!
I plan on taking the rest of today to rest and gear up for the hectic week I have ahead- young professional events, meetings and a kicking off a fundraising campaign.

Sunday Social

1. What is the name if your blog?
Dreams and Colour

2. What do you love most about blogging?
Having the chance to experience new things, including meeting new people.

3. Why did you start blogging?
It seemed like a nice little hobby to have...I've always liked writing.

4. What is something you’d want to tell someone just starting out in the blog world?

Write for yourself. Don't worry about stats, how many followers you have, etc. None of that stuff matters. Make your blog something you love and want to read.

5. Biggest blogging learning experience you’ve had?
Some bloggers are all about drama...I was lucky enough not to get involved in that drama...I have distanced myself from them (ie stopped reading their blog, stopped following them on Twitter, stopped sponsoring their  blog, etc). Also, some bloggers are very clique-ish. They aren't as nice, welcoming or easy to work with as they would have you believe.

6. What are three blogs you love?

(Honourable mentions: Happy Brittany, Journeys of the Zoo and The Love List)

Sunday Social- Fall

Weekends need to be longer...and I know I'm not the only one who thinks that! Yesterday, it was rainy and cold (mid 60's). I still went down to the beach and ran along the shore. It warmed up a bit (high 60s), so I was able to sit on the patio, which was nice. I'm not sure what I'm going to do today...we'll see what happens.

Sunday Social

1. What is your favorite fall activity?
Start of hockey!!! If it's warm enough, going to the beach to read. Brock Homecoming. Drinking salted caramel mocha/frap/macchiato/etc.

2. Do you follow a football team? If so, which one and why?Never got into football...more into hockey (GO RANGERS)...but thanks to friends, I'm kept up to date on how Notre Dame's doing.

3. What is something fun about fall in your area?
Lots of trails to hike in Ontario, if you're into hiking, and look at foliage. Fall fairs are always pretty fun. Brock Homecoming is always a lot of fun. And, of course, fall festivals- ex TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), Grape & Wine, Oktoberfest.

4. What are your favorite fall staple outfits?
Cardigans! I live in cardigans...they keep you warm and go with basically everything. But to answer the question, staple outfit would be: great pair of jeans, basic top, cardigan, heeled shoes and a tote. The colour of the shirts and cardigan would change to create multiple outfits, but this is what I basically wear during the fall.

5. What things are his looking forward to most about this coming fall season?
Enjoying as many salted caramel Starbucks beverages as I can, Brock Homecoming and the start of hockey season.

6. What is your favorite fall holiday? Tradition?Of course, I love Thanksgiving. I love being with my family and friends. But I actually really love Remembrance Day. I love what the holiday stands for, the meaning behind. I love the tradition of our poppies and I wear mine proudly every year.

Sunday Social- Summer 2013

I can't believe this is Labour Day weekend and the unofficial end of summer! Where has the time gone??? I had a very busy, fun and memorable summer. I spent tons of time with family and friends and had a lot of great experiences. This weekend has been a great way to top off the summer- I saw David Myles in concert last night (have been counting down the days since it was announced) and am having my usual end of summer dinner with my summer friend tonight. Sad to see the summer come to an end, but it's been a good one.

Sunday Social

1. What was your favorite trip/vacation/activity this summer?
Didn't take any trips or vacation this year... But my favourite activity was David Myles concert! HUGE fan of his and I was excited to see the concert. I had been counting down the days and David did nto disappoint! It was an amazing show!

2. What was your favorite outfit look/clothing item of the summer?

In the summer, I live in bathing suits, coverups and flip flops. I also keep a denim skirt on hand, which I can easily slip into to 'complete' a look.

3. What is one thing you wish you'd gotten to do this summer?
The only thing I can think of, is I wish I had done more reading. I only read 4 or 5 books on my summer reading list, which had about 16 books on it. I usually read 20 books during the summer. I didn't do a lot of reading because I was so busy doing other things, so this really isn't even a big deal. Also, I wish I had gotten to the beach more...the weather was beautiful during the week and pretty rainy/overcast during the weekend.

4. What was your favorite song of the summer?
How'd I Ever Think I Loved You by David Myles. I love this song! Again, I saw him in concert last night, so how could I not pick this??? Sadly, it wasn't one of the songs he performed.

5. What was your favorite movie/tv show of the summer?

I haven't seen any movies this summer. But tv shows: Big Brother, Camp, Hollywood Game Night and Summer Camp.

Sunday Social- Misc Questions

I'm in the middle of a week-ish off- I took Thursday and Friday off, this weekend, Monday is a holiday, and I took Tuesday off. I haven't taken this much time off since I went to Florida in March! It's pretty nice to take a break from work and just recharge.

Sunday Social

1. What are 3 items you can't live without on a daily basis (water, food, shelter, and clothes don't count)?
Blackberry, internet access, social interaction.

2. What is your all time favorite book? Why?
I have a lot of 'favourite' books, but the first one that comes to mind and probably the one that I re-read most in a year is Prep: A Novel. I love this book for so many reasons. I love Lee as a character- her observations, her experiences, her relationships. I reviewed the book here.

3. What is something you'd like to accomplish before the end of 2013?
Oh gosh...I have no idea! I've had a really great 2013 (so far) and accomplished all of my personal/professional goals that I set for this year. Brock's Homecoming is in September and I would love to have a REALLY great Homecoming!

4. If you could go back and relive any year of your life which year would it be?
Another hard question...I've had a lot of really great years, so it's tough to pick one. But, I'll say grade 12. Prom, graduation, adventures with my (then) best friends...a lot happened that year and it was a really fun year.

5. What do you wish people knew about you without you having to tell them?
I'm actually a really nice, fun, smart person...I know I look stuck up and I know sometimes when I meet people I'm quiet, which makes me seem snobby...I'm quiet because I'm observing the situation and trying to decide how to react...but I'm actually a very nice, friendly, person.

Sunday Social- TV

It's been a crazy week and it's still not over! I had to work yesterday and I have to work today. So, I didn't get a weekend this week...good thing I love my job!

But the reason why you are here:

Sunday Social

1. What was your favorite TV show as a kid?Romper Room, Fred Penner, Under the Umbrella Tree... Full House, Family Ties, everything on TGIF.

2. What is your current favorite TV show?Big Brother! Hollywood Game Night, Dance Moms, Big Bang Theory, Awkward.

3. Which reality show would you NEVER do?
Most of them! Especially anything survivor like.
4. Which reality show would you LOVE to do?
Big Brother is my favourite reality show, but I don't think I'd go on it.
5. What is the TV personality/character that you feel is most like you?
Oh man...I have no idea! I can't even come up with a good answer for this. Hoda Kotb came to mind, but I don't know why... I kind of feel like I don't watch enough tv to answer this...lame, I know. What about Charlotte from SATC?
6. Which TV character would you want to date?Hmm...Toss up between Evan and Cappie, both from Greek. So, I guess, to answer the question above, that would make me Casey. Or Rebecca...she dated both of them.

I have so many favourite songs, it's hard to pick an all time favourite, but I'm going to say Better Man by Pearl Jam.

Joel Plaskett, Luke Bryan and David Myles quickly come to mind. Again, so many favourites, hard to pick just one.
